“Se não houver uma função clara, um objetivo claro, para a aprendizagem, não se pode justificar a manutenção de uma língua estrangeira no currículo das escolas públicas”

Do you think most of English teachers in Brazil have a common and clear aim when they enter in an English class?
What is the main objective in the English classes, in Brazil, especially in the public school?
Hello, we are Merian and Láysa. we study at UFMT campus Rondondópolis. We are happy to share our opinion in this blog. We hope to learn and share our knowledge about English teaching and the texts that we see at university.
ResponderExcluirMerian has a blog that talks about herself; if you want to know more information about Merian, come to Merianblog.blogspot.com :)
See you guys.
Have a nice week ;)
Hi, people! My name is Maíra. I´m a Letras student at UFV in my
ResponderExcluirfourth year of studies. I make part of a project in English area which is developed in a Public School. I think it is really nice to have this opportunity to know people through this blog and to interact with them. In relation to the second question, I would like to explicit my opinion. Based on my experiences in English teaching in Public School I think that most of the times, the main objective in English classes is to fulfill the book. They prioritize quantity instead of quality because to them it is more important to fulfill all the book than to understand the content.
Hugs!
Hello girls!
ResponderExcluirI agree with teacher Luciano's comment. When a teacher prepares his class, he must have a main objective in his or her mind. If he doesn't know the aim of that class, he won't have positive results, and the students won't learn in a meaningful way.
In the case of state schools, the classes seem to be a total loss of time. Most of the teachers try to teach verb to be and translation of texts. They don’t make a link between the language and its usage in our lives.
When English teachers start preparing the classes in order to teach what the students need to know, the results will be much better than nowadays.
See ya,
Nathaly
Hi everybody!!!!!!!
ResponderExcluirI’m here again to show my point of view. I don’t think that most of English teachers have the commom aim and neither have the experience that teaching requires. Most of English teachers don’t know how to start, how to manage the classes. I think that they’re not prepared to answer the doubts that the students have, or to the things that they will have to do the classes more interesting. Most of the students don’t like English because it is difficult to them and because they don’t learn it in an easier way. In their opinion there aren’t any reasons to learn English, and they can’t see in which cases English can be helpful. Maybe the objetives of English teachers are to explain the simple rules and vocabulary, but after a period of time they stop to think about it and just ask students to do translations; and it becomes the key.

ResponderExcluirHello!
ResponderExcluirIt's difficult to say most teachers have a clear aim, but it may be a fact that anyone who speaks English can teach at an English school nowadays, especially if he has been abroad. In that case, if one decides to teach English because they like doing that, being an English major or not, I think the clearest aim one should have, at least, is that his students learn something by the end of a lesson. In this way, I think teachers, in general, have this aim.
Likewise, I hope teachers at public schools expect, at least, that students learn something by the end of a class. I believe the situation in those schools are even more complex, since teachers deal with a lot of problems, icluding indiscipline. How are teachers supposed to teach if students don't seem to care? Even the government doesn't seem to care when they pay English schools to offer English classes to public school students (this is happening in SP). By the way, does English fail anyone? I just think it's difficult to have a greater aim if the politics for language teaching is not clear (neither fair). All teachers may expect is that students learn something and that it may help them somehow.
Best,
Rafael
Hello!
ResponderExcluirMy name is Débora Lys and I'm Maíra's colleague at UFV.
I think that the schools should stop being concerned only about Vestibular and begin to work on a learning process that promotes autonomy and flexibility, thus, the students themselves will spontaneously enrich not only the classes, but their lives.
I think English teachers in Brazil don’t have a common and clear aim in an English class, this is my opinion because when I was at high school my English teachers always taught us the same things and with no purpose, this year in my intern I saw the same situation.
ResponderExcluirI see it is possible teach English in State school, sometimes some teachers don’t want or don’t know how to do it. When I studied there were teachers that taught in State school and private English courses and it was clear to see a different behavior in relation to their classes. They were more engaged with private courses than State school.
I’ my opinion, most of English teachers in Brazil don’t have a common and clear aim when they enter in an English class because in the public school the teaching is a chaotyc.
ResponderExcluirI think that, here in Brazil, especially in the public school don’t have any objective in English classes.
Hello!!!!!!!!!
ResponderExcluirIn my opinion, English teachers in Brazil do not have a common and clear aim when they enter in an English class, because in The most of the time they are not prepared to teach a foreign language. They teach their students just the same thing during all the time they are at school, for example, one day I asked a teacher why she always taught the same thing for her class and she said me “It is not important that they learn this language, it is just because there is this class and is my obligation to teach something”
Here in Brazil the main objective in teaching English, especially in the state school is to prepare the students to vestibular they teach just the basic that the students have to know to do an exam to go to University.
However, I know is possible students to learn English language at school. The teachers and the school firstly must be prepared to do it and leaving this belief that at school is impossible to learn English.
Hello!!!!
ResponderExcluirI think that the most of teachers do not have enough knowledge to teach their students. when they finished their letter course, they think that will be able to do a lot different thing in high school. However, the ploblem is, many teachers do not have enough qualification to teach the English language. In a public school the main objective is to prepare the student to the University entrance exam. The state school does not have a sequence of teaching, mainly in English language doesn´t have a progress in its program, consequently the students hate the English class.

Hello!
ResponderExcluirIn my opinion, most of English teachers in Brazil don't have a clear aim in their classes. The content of them is usually repetitive and the students just learn rules, some vocabulary and 'the verb to be'. A topic of the language is taught without being related to its true use and essencial habilities like speaking and listening aren't worked. Also, many teachers aren't enough prepared to teach well because they didn't develop relevant qualifications during their graduations. As a result, they don't satisfy the students expectations about learning a new language, especially in the public school.

Hi guys.
ResponderExcluirFirst of all, many English teachers in Brazil don't even know to speak or to teach English.
In public schools, most of them are only fulfilling the schedule cuz' many of these professionals were teaching other subjects before, but they end up being assigned to teach what they do not know. Of course that we have fantastic professionals at public schools, and we know that they would love to be able to teach more than the basic (knowing that basic means the personal pronouns and the verb to be), but the government doesn't care about it... so, it's easy to see that there are many teachers that don't have a common and clear aim when they enter in an English class.
Sad, but true.
Laurenci.
Hello....
ResponderExcluirI'm very happy because we can share our opinions and learning a bit more about our profession. profession. So, I could realize that some comments discredit in the the public school teacher's fluency in English, on the other hand, we should understand that most of them didn't have a good formation. They had to divide their course in two parts: English and Portuguese, as many our Letras courses. But I believe that English must be taught with a purpose.
Hello dear friends, sorry for not having participated from this moment, but I would like to let my opinion here about this activity. Firstly, I don't think the teachers of English have a clear objective when entering in a classroom. Maybe this happens due to how the education system conduct things. I believe the teacher can have some clear objectives sometimes, but it depends on the production context. With relation to the second question, the main objective in English classroom is to accomplish a determined content without reflecting so much about the students' needs and difficulties. For this, we must take the social, historical and cultural context into account. If we think about the public school, it is important to know that the objective is much more different and complex than other contexts. I believe we, teachers of English, must think about who we want to prepare, what kind of studend and people we want to prepare. In other words, what kind of school do we want to have? What do you think about these ideas?
ResponderExcluirThanks!
I totally agree with Maria in her comment and I'm also sorry for the time i havent taken part of the discussions.I just add that when teachers do have a purpose in a way that it can provide good results, the school doesnt provide support enough for applying it. In face of this, it's too hard if the teacher keeps trying to give classes following his/her aims, pretending better prepare his students in an affective way. When the school lets the teacher assume what to do in class,(it doenst matter what happens in english classes, so what generaly happens is to give a bunch of subjects) it doesnt provide how to use it.
ResponderExcluirTo my mind there are two points to think about: if the teachers are good enough to teach and able to understand what the students need is one point. The second is about what the school offers to both teachers and students in order to provide a good English education.
I do believe we have good teachers that can prepare a good class with good results. The problem is: most of them teach in private schools because there are good material to use, and good suport to teach. In public schools, our good teachers who have affective aims and can use it in class are heros, and we dont easily find heros around.
