My own method?

Talking about methods, methodologies and different approaches during the Second language teaching-learning process, Oliveira (2009, p. 145) believes that “ao criar seu próprio “método”, o professor deixa de ser um “técnico passivo” e passa a ser um “praticante reflexivo””. The author has found in Dewey (1997, p.13) another positive example, when an English teacher, facing a real class, observes what have happened and not just follow a previous curriculum. This teacher him/herself, in their opinion, is reflecting about the context and planing his/her own method.

Do you think a teacher can improve the classes organizing “his/her own method”?

What could be the do`s and don`ts for a teacher like this?

What’s the importance of being a reflective teacher?

  1. In relation to methods, I think that the most important thing is the teacher to know the students, because only in this way he/she can use the best method with the students, once each classroom is different and you have to adopt your method to teach. Hugs.Maíra Ferreira.

  2. In my opinion, a teacher MUST prepare the classes according to the school, the class, the students. Each class you teach is different, each student is different, so a method never will work with all of your students. This way, you will be a good teacher if you reflect about each class you give and your reflections will improve the other ones you'll prepare.
Sometimes a teacher needs to create her own method to a specific class, because the other ones didn't work, students weren't learning.

  3. I completely agree with those previous comentaries... As soon as I read those I remembered a teacher of mine who said once to my class that 'students are not all the same to fit in the same bottle'. This bottle refers to the same way teachers use to teach their students by following the same curriculum.

Indeed, I reckon a teacher 'MUST' check if in a way (individually or in relation to the classes in general) he/she is using this bottle. To my mind it's really important to be a reflexive teacher. However, i also think teachers cant just throw the previous schedule away, but observe what can be preservated and what should be replaced for something else.

In a brief, the do's of acting like this are the result of a good teaching practice while the dont's are so expansive that we cant simply consider as a bad result.

  4. I Agree with those comentaries too ... Each student has individual needs which means that each class is different and requires different teachings in accordance with the limitations.

  5. Well.... it's a very hard point. First of all, I don`t believe we follow a specific method or methodology. Even when we work at "free" language schools, that work with closed methods, both, teacher and students change things according to their needs. My experience like and English teacher makes me believe that teach and learn is not a process we can totally control...

I do believe we are always living these class dilemmas. The difference from a reflexive to a passive professional is that these ones are not sensitive enough. A reflexive teacher shouldn`t wait until the end of the course to change the way he/she teaches. We can do ir during the process.

Nowadays, with all information students are in touch, it must be considered "intellectual terrorism" to throw away their life experience and its contribution to the process.

    The do's:
Prepare very well your classes. Doing this we can have arguments and expand knowledge inside the classroom.

The books are important. But, they don`t come from "sky" neither from "heaven". They are not sacred... we can really change, optimize and rearrange things there.

Students need to know what they are going to study…so: discuss the schedule with them. How can someone get the point if he don`t have any idea about what is his goals??????

    The don'ts

Summing up, don`t be afraid, the road to success is paved with failure…

    See u guys.

  6. I agree with the author. I believe that teachers must always reflect on their practice in the classroom. the world is always changing and the practices in the classroom must accompany them.

  7. Hello everybody!!!

I think that a teacher can improve classes organizing his/her method from the moment that he or she gets to know the needs of the group.
In my opinion an only method can't applied for all class, because each class has different needs. However, all this will require a bit goodwill by teachers too. A reflexive teacher sure will help more her/his students to improve the second language acquisition.

  8. I believe each teacher has his/her own teaching style. I think it's important to see if students are learning what you teach and using strategies to facilitate their learning.
In the course of time is possible to realize what is working and what needs to be changed.

  9. I think that when the teacher has an organization of his/her methods, it will be easy for him giving his class because the students know when their teachers does not have security with his/her methodology. If the teacher become a reflexive he/she going to know what to do to improve his/her class and become it more interesting.

  10. Hey everybody!
In my opinion it's very important to be a reflexive teacher. When we face a classrom, we must know what to do, and the first step is knowing the students. If you know their difficulties, you can plan the classes according to what they need to know. I believe it's important to spend a little more time preparing classes and have good results instead of just following the curriculum.
Also, students will feel more motivated when they notice that the teacher cares about them and their difficulties, and that he/she is really interested in making them learn English.

  11. FOR SURE! BECAUSE EACH CLASS HAS DIFERENT STUDENTS, THEREFORE THE TEACHER NEED TO MAKE DIFERENTS STRATEGIES. THIS MEANS THAT THE TEACHER REALLY WIIL HELP THE STUDENTS. BUT IS NECESSARY PLANNING.
THIS TEACHER COULD NOT DISCOURAGE NOR TO UNDERESTIMATE BUT MUST TO ESTIMULATE.HOW? DOING SIMPLE EXERCISES AND AFTER MORE DIFICULTY , SO THE STUDENT WILL BE PROGRESS!
A REFLEXIVE TEACHER IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE WITH EFFORT HE WILL BE HABLE TO TO GET YOUR PURPOSE, TO HELP THE STUDENTS. FOR EXEMPLE IF THE STUDENT HASDIFICULTY IN SPEAKING OR LISTENING THE REFLEXIVE TEACHER WILL DEVELOP A WAY , ONE ACTIVITY. AS A RESULT THE STUDENT WILL INCREASE YOUR INTEREST.

  12. I’m sure a teacher can really improve the classes if he/she uses hir/her own method. I think a previous methodology can be considered, but it has to be applied according to the context of the group. It’s important reflect about that because each student in a class is different and each one has his/her own specific way of learning.

  13. Hello, dear friends, I'm sorry for not having discussed anymore, but I have been doing many things at the same time! Thanks God, I am here again! With relation to the questions about methods, I think a teacher can improve the classes organizing “his/her own method” because this can help the teacher and the students to deal with the reality of the learning process in the classroom. I agree with Daiane when she speaks about the differences of the students and their learning realities. However, it is necessary to be careful when thinking about a method or methodology, firstly, it is important to know the difference between these two concepts. Secondly, it is very interesting to be a reflexive teacher, but, we must know exactly what this question and its implications mean. With relation to the do'and don`ts for a teacher like this, it is gonna depend on the teacher's production context.

What’s the importance of being a reflexive teacher?

  14. In my opinion classes have to be done thinking in their students necessities, only the teacher know how to deal with their students, because sometimes they need to teacher in the traditional way for their students understand better.

  15. I think the reflective teacher is the best option for classes that have students with different levels of english. Surely it works. But you need great interaction with the class teacher and get to motivate them to go further.

Obviously, a class previously prepared and organized makes things easier for the teacher and for the student.

A reflexive teacher will consider the "whole" situation. I mean, will teach considering the many different levels of dificulty.

  17. I believe that Yes, because the methods used in the classroom are teacher competency, and he knows better than anyone else in your room. A reflective teacher can understand their pupils and thus achieve a well in the classroom.

  18. Hi, everybody!!! Here I am again. Answering the question about the possibility of a teacher improve the classes organizing "his/her own method" is not easy, because most of us try to do our best in class, what, in my opinion, implies special actions. In fact, I have a question: can we create our own method? I think what we do is closely related to methodology/strategies. Am I wrong?
As most of the previous answers I agree that we have to consider our groups while preparing classes and also during them, so that we can get a better result in the process of teaching and learning. Based on that, it`s possible to say that a teacher should carefully prepare his/her lessons, consider the differences between the groups, be attentive to the process of interaction, know what he/she expects from the students, among other possibilities. If I think about the teacher`s don`ts I can say that the fear of making mistakes by trying different "things" can interfere in his/her development and also in his/her way of teaching. Theories and perspectives change so should we and being a reflexive teacher is an important way to notice when and why things must be adapted, created or totally changed.

Some research findings!!!

This blog was a virtual space where a group of students worked collaboratively in order to discuss about lots of interesting questions related to English learning and teaching process. It was also part of a Master Degree research project from the Applied Linguistics Department of UFMT (Federal University of Mato Grosso- Brazil). Here you can download and read a dissertation text written by Ana Regina Bresolin, oriented by Dr. Danie Marcelo de Jesus, in 2011.
