Are you fluent?

“Mesmo a classe média que normalmente freqüenta cursos particulares de inglês durante 5/7 anos geralmente perde a fluência alcançada no curso depois que termina seus estudos”. Moita Lopes, 1996, p.131

MOITA LOPES, Luís Paulo da.  A função da aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras na escola pública. In: ______. Oficina de lingüística aplicada. Campinas: Mercado das Letras, p.127-136, 1996.

In your opinion and according to your life experience: is it common to a person that have been studying English for such a long period of time (five to seven years, for example) to lose so easily his/her fluency?

  1. Hi! My name is Thalita, I`m a Letras student from Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Its nice to share our opinions and knowledge here!
I think we really have to use the foreign language we study in order not to lose it : "use it or lose it". If we dont use the language, we will lose all the hard work we had in five or seven years. Fluency is something that you acquire with a lot of practice, and if there is no practice (use), we might lose it. Nowadays, English is everywhere, so it is not so hard keep in touch with this language!

  3. Hi!!!!
I believe it is common to lose fluency, because English isn't our mother tongue. I think it is necessary to keep on studying and praticing all days, but it depends on each person.

  4. hi guys, I`m sure, there are many people that have studied a lot a foreign language and for a long time, but when these people stop to practice what they have learned, they tend to forget some grammatical rules and words they don´t practice.

  5. Hello!!!
I believe that when we learn something and we don't practice it, it's easy to forget meanly a language. It's important to have discipline if you want to be successful. As we live in a non-English country we probably won't speak English enough, according to my life experience I speak English only in classroom, but not at home or wherever. I think this happens to people who do private courses, they only practice English when they are studying.
    That's my honest opinion.

  6. Hey people.
I think it is possible to easily lose the fluency in English. This language is very different from ours, and if we don't practice we forget words, expressions, and because of this we don't speak with confidence. When we are not sure of what we're talking about, we can't be fluent because we are going to pause to think of a word, to repeat things we've already said, so it is hard to make clear what we want to say.
That's what I think about fluency.
    See you =)

  7. Hi, guys...

Learning a language means "practice". It's really important talking in English, watching movies and listening music (to don't lose the communicative ability) even though, you'd spent many years in an English Course. Also, more and more people practice, better they gonna be in fluence.

  8. hi, guys..
I think that practice is primary because the fluency is practice so if you stop to speak you lost the fluency.

  9. I believe that to achieve fluency in English is very difficult and it takes much effort and dedication. I have great difficulty because I don't have many people to speak in English. But I'll keep trying.

  10. I believe that some people learn faster than others, but it depends, of course, on his/her effort like Rita says, and also the time spent in real contact with the target language. In fact nobody has a "natural facility".

Talking about fluency... I really don`t believe we lose our abilities so easily. Usually, even most of us think we are not good enough, that we are committing lots of mistakes, we can communicate in such a large kind of situations. For me, it's a myth... And, what’s to be fluent??? Are you fluent in Portuguese??? What about illiterate people...are they fluent? Lots of things to think about...

  11. Well,

I depends on your own efforts... you need to practice, to listen to music and to interact with english-speakers, so you'll be able to keep your knowledge "fresh". :)

  12. Hello people!!!!!!!!!1
In my opinion, is very easily someone who decide to learn a new languange, as English to lose fluency, because it so different from ours. Being fluent in English for example needs a lot of practice, and if you do not practice, you will forget almost all that you learn.
    Thank you....

  14. I think that if the person who have been studing a second language for a long time and do not practice it, it sure this person will lose he/her fluency, because of this we always have to share our knowlodge about target language, the same way it will be hard to lose our fluency.

  15. 1 In my opinion It’s difficult somebody study English for five or seven years and after to forget that learnt. However this happens because the student do not endeavor, as a result he lose some things. Many students do not study in your home, sometimes study only at school or at course, so after the course of english finish and they easily forget .

  16. I think it’s common to a person that has been studying English for such a long period of time lose the fluency, but not easily. The languages are dynamic. They are always changing. I believe if someone who studied English for five years for example, and after that he/she lose the habit of reading, listening, writing and speaking, he/she can lose the fluency because it’s necessary to keep in touch with the language in order to maintain it present with you.

Some research findings!!!

This blog was a virtual space where a group of students worked collaboratively in order to discuss about lots of interesting questions related to English learning and teaching process. It was also part of a Master Degree research project from the Applied Linguistics Department of UFMT (Federal University of Mato Grosso- Brazil). Here you can download and read a dissertation text written by Ana Regina Bresolin, oriented by Dr. Danie Marcelo de Jesus, in 2011.
